McGonigal has the stench of Robert Hanssen about him yet he has received limited attention from the media. The amount of damage to our national security McGonigal had the potential to do far surpasses anything Hanssen actually did. Hanssen went directly to jail and is still there. McGonigal is out on bail. The FBI is mightily embarrassed, as it should be. All major news, right? So what gives?

Indeed. “If the SAC for counterintelligence in New York went bad, truly bad, meaning espionage, the losses would be almost insurmountable,” a former top FBI official, asking for anonymity to discuss such a sensitive matter, told SpyTalk. “If I had to pick the top four or five roles in the FBI to be recruited by a foreign service, that would be the worst case scenario…”

McGonigal's betrayal would rank him with Hanssen and Ames in the annals of US turncoats. I'm a bit suprised other media hasn't weighed in more on the case by now, but I expect they soon will.
