Jeff, great message. Like you, we discovered an aneurysm incidental to another issue. (an ultrasound is sufficient for screening). I have described the same feeling, like have a grenade ready to go off in your chest. I also had a successful repair, and yes it is one heckuva surgery. Good luck going forward!
It's a good public health message and I'm glad you're not going to die suddenly from a ruptured aorta! And I applaud the attention grabbing headline - though it would be more accurate to say "Smoking put my life at risk and medical screening plus surgery saved it" :)
