I believe the Agency was penetrated by at least three moles before Aldrich Ames started spying for the KGB: James Angleton’s confidant, mentor, and mole-hunting superior in the Office of Security, Soviet Russia Division Reports & Requirements officer Leonard V. McCoy, and “CIA’s greatest agent handler,” Russia-born George Kisevalter. One of the things they all had in common was that they defended false defector-in-place in Geneva in June 1962 / false (or perhaps rogue) physical defector to the U.S. in February 1964, putative KGB staff officer Yuri Nosenko.
