SWIFT DEPARTURE: Austria’s Chancellor said a “tragedy” had been averted Wednesday when police arrested three teenagers, one of whom confessed to planning to kill as many people as possible outside a Taylor Swift concert in Vienna.
Nearly 200,000 people had been expected to attend the three Vienna concerts at Ernst Happel Stadium, which were to run Thursday through Saturday. An estimated 20,000 or more fans were expected to gather outside. The shows were canceled due to the threat.
Chancellor Karl Nehammer thanked foreign intelligence services for alerting Austria’s DSN domestic security agency, set up in 2021 after its predecessor failed to stop a mass shooting in Vienna the year before carried out by an ISIS sympathizer. CNN reported that an unidentified U.S. intelligence agency relayed the warning.
