A welcome review of events in a part of the world not currently of much interest to the Trump administration, but one which will be back in the headlines all too soon. Let's hope there are US policy makers--not named Witkoff or Kushner--who are paying attention, but I honestly don't know what roles the State Department and the CIA play these days.

Thanks for this fine work, Miss Gannon. There are several interesting insights here, most prominently, the Indian/ Taliban cooperation that is returning after a hiatus for a few years. As you probably well know, India was the largest regional donor to Afghanistan for years. One point not surprising is a new IS related element in Baluchistan. Southwestern Iran, Baluchistan and Afghanistan's tri-state region, has long been a haven for Sunni extremists. Surely acquiring IS support was easily enough to adopt a relationship. That particular region has also been pain for all three nations, and a dangerous threat to Chinese efforts to finally make a little progress on CPEC, Xi's BRI crown jewel, which has been doing poorly from the very beginning.

I hadn't been following the region as closely as I did for a couple of decades and am quite grateful for your expert and detailed overview. For me, a great update.

I bet it sucks to be a Chinese contractor working on the CPEC. lol 🥷🏴💣💥☠️

That US pullout wasn't a fiasco. It was a well calculated asymmetrical chess move that keeps China dependent on the Strait of Malacca.
