NO SOONER DID DONALD TRUMP WIN last week’s election than his supporters were excitedly circulating a campaign video that spells out his sweeping plans to achieve one of the prime goals of his presidency: to “dismantle” the “Deep State.”
“We will clean out all of the corrupt actors in our national security and intelligence apparatus,” Trump declared in the nearly four minute video posted on his campaign website last year.
Among other items in Trump’s 10-point plan: Fire “rogue bureaucrats,” appoint a “truth and reconciliation commission” to expose Deep State “spying,” and launch “a major crackdown on government leakers who collude with the fake news,” including pressing “criminal charges,” when possible.
It’s long been a Washington guessing game as to just how much of Trump’s rhetoric is mere bluster aimed at catering to his MAGA base— and how much of it reflects an actual policy agenda. But with the stunning news that Trump has picked MAGA firebrand Matt Gaetz as his pick for attorney general, Trump’s Deep State plans suddenly seem more real than ever.
