The former CIA man at the heart of “Italygate,” the pro-Trump, Qanon-fueled conspiracy theory that satellites and military technology were used to steal the 2020 election from Donald Trump, was fired from the spy agency for “unprofessional” conduct, according to former coworkers.
Johnson, his colleagues said, had been the target of an internal counterintelligence investigation and an inspector general’s probe. “He was pulled from an assignment for errors in personal judgment,” said a former CIA senior officer who served with Johnson. “He had significant problems and was held accountable.”
“He was dangerous to us, to the U.S. and an agency hazard,” said another former senior officer, who like the others, was granted anonymity to discuss internal personnel matters. This officer suggested that Johnson was considered a security threat.
