Iran Threatens Revenge 'Like a Thunderbolt'

The assassination of its top nuclear scientist resets the diplomatic table

There’s no formal claim of responsibility for today’s brazen broad-daylight ambush-murder of top Iranian nuclear scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, but Tehran has lost no time fixing blame on Israel and the U.S. and threatening retaliation.

"Hard revenge is awaiting murderers” of Fakhrizadeh, Major General Mohammad Hossein Baqeri, chief of staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, said in a message published today by the semi-official Fars News Agency.

Hossein fixed blame on attackers "affiliated with the global arrogance and the evil Zionist regime." (“Global arrogance” is the Iranian regime’s favorite epithet for the United States.)

“The Zionists, in the final days of their gambler ally, are making every effort to ignite an all-out war by putting pressure on Iran," former Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Hossein Dehqan, military advisor to Iran’s Supreme Leader, said in a tweet, according to Fars. (“Gambler” apparently refers to President Donald Trump, a former casino owner.)
