The false flag operation has gone from obscure espionage tactic to culture war staple in the course of a generation.

Two internal Department of Homeland Security reports, made public last week by Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), describe how a senior DHS official sought to assign blame for the May 2020 rioting in Portland, Oregon over the police murder of George Floyd on a vast leftwing conspiracy.  The technique: labeling every person arrested as “Violent Antifa Anarchist Inspired.” As Wyden put it, DHS had “no evidence” to back up the charge.
